The Sophisticated Ladies Edelweiss Tour
June 16-24, 2019
The Sophisticated Ladies of Duke Ellington School of the Arts’ Vocal Music Department have been extended a tremendous learning and performance opportunity: a performance tour in Austria!
The Sophisticated Ladies is a 30-voice female ensemble comprised of vocal music majors in grades 9 through 12 under the direction of Sylvia V.C. Twine. The ensemble performs a repertoire of traditional choral literature that encompasses spirituals, musical theater, classical and jazz. The Sophisticated Ladies’ Edelweiss Tour is scheduled for June 16, 2019 and will include music history tours and performances in Vienna, Melk and Salzburg, Austria. The Sophisticated Ladies will visit and perform in venues such as St. Peter’s Church in Vienna, Schonbrun Palace Basilica St. Michael in Mondsee as well as friendship concerts with Viennese schools. As musical ambassadors, these young singers will experience a cultural exchange that is certain to enlighten and inspire their dreams.
This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity has a hefty price tag and many of the girls’ families cannot afford the full cost on their own. The total cost of the trip per student is estimated at $3,500. Our goal is to “leave no girl behind” and make it financially possible for all members of the ensemble to travel.
